If you travel outside of the EU or EEA countries or Switzerland for the purpose of using healthcare services, your costs will not be reimbursed.
Seek reimbursement for travel costs from Kela on form SV 128.
Travel relating to treatment provided with a prior authorisation
If Kela has granted you prior authorisation for treatment in another EU or EEA country or in Switzerland, your travel costs will be reimbursed retrospectively from Finland up to your place of treatment. Usually, you will only pay a deductible of EUR 25 for a one-way trip.
- If your place of treatment is a geographical neighbour of your country of residence, the costs of travel lasting less than six hours are reimbursed according to the cheapest means of travel. If the travel lasts more than six hours using the cheapest means of travel, Kela will reimburse travel by other means of transport.
- If the country is not a geographical neighbour, travel will be reimbursed regardless of the means of transport.
- If your illness, a severe injury or traffic conditions require the use of a special vehicle, such as a taxi, ambulance, ambulance plane or ambulance helicopter, Kela will reimburse the incurred costs based on a doctor’s certificate.
