The public information service for the registers of social welfare and health care professionals (JulkiSuosikki and JulkiTerhikki)

The professional qualifications of social welfare and health care professionals can be verified in the public information service maintained by Valvira for the registers of social welfare and health care professionals (JulkiSuosikki and JulkiTerhikki, respectively). The public information service is automatically updated from the registers of professionals once a day. Expired rights to practise and details of written warnings or reprimands are not included in the public information service.

JulkiTerhikki and JulkiSuosikki

The public information service contains these details:

  1. name of the professional
  2. registration number
  3. year of birth
  4. professional’s right to practise
  5. information on restriction of the right to practise

Browser recommendations and search guidelines

You can only search for the details of one person at a time. Use either the name of the person or their registration number as the search term.

A registration number consists of 11 digits. It is not the same as the professional’s unique identifier, formerly known as the SV number.

Ensure that you spell the name correctly in your search. Foreign names often have prefixes or contain special characters such as apostrophes (‘) or accents (^). You may omit special characters when entering a name. If you do use special characters, you must spell the name exactly correctly, or the system will not recognise it.

If the surname has a prefix (such as ‘von’), you can omit that in the search. You must enter at least one name other than the surname, but it does not have to be the first name in sequence. You cannot use wildcards (such as ‘*’) in the search.

Search results

The search will return information on the professional qualifications of the person you searched for (e.g. general surgeon, social worker) and their year of birth.

The search results may also indicate that the person is on a fixed-term right to practise (right to practise under the supervision and guidance of a physician, right to practise medicine under supervision and guidance). This means that the person is a social welfare or health care professional who has been trained outside Finland. Valvira initially grants some such persons a fixed-term right to practise. Once their fixed term expires, these persons will no longer be found in the register. Also, if a person’s right to practise as a social welfare or health care professional or a person’s right to use a protected occupational title has been completely revoked, that person will no longer be found in the register.

The search may also return a result stating that the person’s right to practise as a social welfare or health care professional has been restricted. For further details on the content of such a restriction, and on the search results more generally, please contact the customer service for rights to practise (contact details below).

Protected occupational titles

Social welfare and health care professionals are divided into legalised professionals and professionals using a protected occupational title. Not all health care professionals using a protected occupational title need to be approved by Valvira; some gain the right to use their title automatically by virtue of their training. For example, practical nurses in health care services are professionals who gain the right to use a protected occupational title through regulated training. Not all of them have entered their details in the Valvira register, but they are nevertheless qualified health care professionals.

Health care students

The information service contains details on students of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy who have gained the right to work temporarily as legalised professionals.
