Verifying the correctness of a foreign medical prescription

Where possible, pharmacies must independently investigate and verify the correctness and authenticity of prescriptions, which have been issued abroad and look into any other questions related to the prescriptions.

If necessary, pharmacies may ask the contact point for cross-border health care to ascertain the right to issue prescriptions of a health care professional operating in another EU country. Requests can be sent to the contact point by e-mail (yhteyspiste(at) In order to investigate the matter, the contact point needs information about the health care professional who issued the prescription (name, professional qualifications, contact information, work address and country) and information about the medication.

  • If the request contains sensitive personal information, ensure that the data is protected. If necessary, you can request the contact point to open a secure e-mail connection.
  • The contact point requests information from the authorities in other EU countries using the electronic Internal Market Information System (IMI). At present, it is not possible to use the IMI system to send information requests to countries outside the EU.
  • Ascertaining the matter may take several workdays depending on how quickly the authority in the other country responds to the request for information. It is not possible to obtain the information immediately because the EU countries do not have a joint register of health care professionals.
