A Sami-language version of the Choosehealthcare.fi website has been launched at saame.hoitopaikanvalinta.fi. The website offers up-to-date information about how to access health services in Finland and abroad.
Choosehealthcare.fi is an online health information resource created by the Contact Point for Cross-Border Healthcare, the National Institute for Health and Welfare, the Finnish Social Insurance Institution Kela, and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
It offers information to individual users and health care professionals about the rights and ways for patients to access health services in Finland and abroad, and contains information on health care fees, treatment costs and reimbursements.
Choosehealthcare.fi helps users navigate issues related to healthcare access in cross-border situations. For example, it provides details that cover situations where a patient requires emergency medical attention or seeks treatment in another country.
Choosehealthcare.fi was launched in October 2015. Currently available in Finnish, Swedish and English, the website will now also be available in Northern Sami. The full content of the site has been translated into Northern Sami, with the exception of country-specific information about health services and the pages for health care professionals.
According to Marika Lahtivirta, head of the Contact Point for Cross-Border Healthcare, the idea is to extend the selection of languages to cover more of the languages spoken in Finland and to give Sami readers the opportunity to get information in their native language. As the information is made available in more languages, it is hoped that as many healthcare users as possible will discover the website and the information on it.
