Treating healthcare professional

You can choose the doctor or other licensed healthcare professional, such as a nurse or public health nurse, who will treat you at your health centre or hospital. The choice of professional treating you depends on how your care can be appropriately delivered in your place of treatment. In follow-up treatment you can, if you wish, see the doctor or dentist who treated you before.

In general, it is important for patients to be able to choose their personal doctor. Patient freedom to choose the healthcare professional treating them is guided in effect by working in pairs, population responsibility and multiprofessional team work. Thus when you choose your doctor, you also choose the nurse working with him or her or the whole team treating you. Your choice may not be possible, however, if your health centre´s doctor or doctor-nurse team is unable to accept new patients within the constraints of their working hours.
